Empowering Women Through Flood-Resilient Livelihoods
In the flood-prone areas in Morigaon district of Assam, where traditional livelihoods are often disrupted by recurring natural disasters, the Guwahati Gana Seva Society (GGSS), under the Global Program India, has launched a transformative initiative to foster economic resilience. In 2021, GGSS provided comprehensive training to 80 women beneficiaries, equipping them with the skills to establish and sustain an alternative, flood-resilient livelihood through weaving.
Despite their daily responsibilities in farming and household management, these women dedicate 3-4 hours each day to weaving, turning it into a viable source of income. The training covered essential aspects of weaving techniques, product creation, design intricacies, and market expansion, enabling them to scale up their work and reach broader markets. This initiative not only enhances their financial independence but also strengthens their capacity to overcome economic challenges posed by frequent floods, fostering long-term sustainability and empowerment.
