Plastic Mulching Demonstration to Hostel Children

The project intervention focuses on initiating vegetables and fruits cultivations at 26 hostels with special focus on organic farming practices ensuring the children’s participation. The project also intends to make the hostels being self sufficient to meet the needs of vegetables and fruits for the daily consumption and to produce them by following organic way of cultivation. It is an added value that children could enjoy chemical free vegetables during their daily meals. The children will be supported to involve in entire process like preparing the field, sowing/ planting of seeds and seedlings, bio manure application, weeding and harvesting etc. The intervention looks to ensure food safety and sufficiency of the school children of 26 hostels under the Archdiocese of Guwahati by the end of the project. Specific Objectives:  To reduce the dependence on external markets for vegetables, fruits and tubers needed for daily consumption.  To impart the skills oriented trainings to the targeted school children on various sustainable agriculture and other allied skills.  To equip the target children with the knowledge and skill in organic farming, and in making bio pesticides, inputs etc.  To enhance knowledge of the target groups on improvement of soil fertility and land productivity.  To improve income through production of quality produce and by reducing the purchase cost of vegetables and fruits from external markets.
